Background

Christina Huynh is an artist, muralist, and illustrator. For murals, she paints under the pseudonym STYNA, and has completed multiple murals across Australia. ‘Storytelling’ is a dominant theme throughout her murals: that is, telling stories through murals to connect to and communicate with people through the artworks she creates.

This 50m mural is funded by the Walker Corporation who is constructing the new Western Sydney University campus in Bankstown, NSW. The building will take approximately two years to complete and Walker Corporation has invested in an artist to create a mural on the hoarding of the construction site. Christina was selected from a myriad of artists who submitted their vision for the site.

Property developers, like the Walker Corporation, are now engaging artists to complete works on hoardings that contain the future sights of new buildings. This is an acknowledgment that new development sites take over the community for extended periods of time and the use of public art in these spaces symbolises a change in the way these companies interact with the local community.

STYNA’s vision for the mural was to create an artwork that encapsulates everyday life, reflects on the potential impact of the university within the community, and the importance of books and storytelling in our lives.
